Leadership doesn’t just happen. At least good leadership doesn’t. It takes effort and intentionality. When we get into the habit of just “going with the flow,” we may be okay for a little while, but life and leadership simply do not work on autopilot.

Take marriage, for instance. Many marriages have ended to the surprise of one partner because they had stopped putting in the effort and assumed everything was okay. When you meet a couple who have been married a long time and ask them how they did it, you rarely hear, “Oh, it was easy. We just relaxed and let it happen.” You are more likely to hear, “Well, it was work, but it was worth it!”

The same can be true of our relationships with our children. When your kids are living at home, it's easy to take your time together for granted. After all, you see each other every day. But when they move out, their visits become intentional. You make time to connect, catch up, and really be together. Sometimes, that intentionality can lead to an even closer relationship than when you were living under the same roof.

**The same principle applies to every area of our lives. Growth doesn't just happen. We need to be intentional about it.**

So, here’s a great exercise. Think about the three areas of the integrated life: personal, professional, and spiritual.

In what ways can you be more intentional in your **personal** life? How can you make an intentional effort to strengthen your marriage, your relationships with your children, and your friendships? How can you be more intentional about your health? And how can you make more room for things that are life-giving and fun?

What about your **professional** life? Are you still growing in your skills and knowledge? Are your relationships at work healthy, or could they use some attention?

Anyone who has tried to scale a company will tell you it takes intentionality. What do you need to do that may not come naturally but has the potential to make a significant difference?

The third area of the integrated life is **spiritual**. This is probably the area most often overlooked because it is so much less tangible. Your personal and professional lives will demand your attention when something isn't working, but spiritual growth requires you to be deliberate and curious.

Discuss with your LeaderImpact group how you can each grow in this area. What are your fellow group members doing to grow spiritually? What books are they reading? How can you encourage one another in your growth?

We believe God has a purpose and plan for you. He is intimately involved in your life, and this life is yours to live and make the most of.

**So, where could a little more intentionality make the biggest difference in your life? And how can we help you take that next step?**
